How to Book Lufthansa First Class with Points (Without Wasting Your Miles)
If you’ve been in the points and miles world for more than five minutes, you’ve probably heard it already:
Lufthansa First Class is one of the most iconic award redemptions out there.
From the First Class Terminal in Frankfurt to the caviar service onboard, it’s one of those “bucket list” flights that people obsess over for a reason.
But booking it with points? That’s where things get tricky.
Here’s how Lufthansa First Class award availability actually works — and which programs I’d recommend using.
The easiest way to find Lufthansa First Class? Miles & More.
If you want the best access to Lufthansa First Class award space, Lufthansa’s own program — Miles & More — is usually the winner.
In general, Lufthansa releases award seats to its own members far earlier than partner programs, often when the schedule opens (around 360 days out). Lufthansa’s own site notes that upgrades can be booked from 360 days before departure, and many frequent flyers report award space can appear around the same booking window as well.
Why I don’t usually recommend Miles & More
Even though availability is best, I personally don’t love booking through Miles & More because:
Miles are harder to earn than other Star Alliance currencies
Transfer partner options are limited (e.g. Amex or Chase miles to Miles & More)
Fuel surcharges can be brutal
So yes — it’s often the best place to find Lufthansa First Class. But it’s not always the best place to book it.
2) Partner availability usually opens 2-3 prior
If you’re trying to book Lufthansa First Class through another Star Alliance program (like Aeroplan, United, or LifeMiles), flexibility is everything.Historically, Lufthansa has only released First Class seats to partner programs within ~14 days of departure. That’s still the widely accepted rule, but in real life it often feels more like 2–3 days before departure. Recent guides still describe the partner release window as a maximum of about two weeks, with many seats dropping much closer in.My real-world rule:
Start looking: up to 14 days before departure
What often happens: 2–3 days out
Best strategy: have a backup business class booking, then swap into First if it opens
That’s exactly where the right program can make or break this redemption.
3) Best programs to book Lufthansa First Class
Option 1: United MileagePlus
United is the most “mainstream” option and probably the one most people check first.
Pros:
Low taxes & fees (usually the best of the bunch)
Easy to use
No fuel surcharges
Cons:
Usually requires the most points
Not my favorite for maximizing value
Less appealing if you need to constantly cancel/rebook compared to some alternatives
If you want simplicity and low cash out of pocket, United is solid.
If you want the best deal or need to buy miles, there are often better options.
Option 2: Avianca LifeMiles
Avianca LifeMiles can be a sneaky-good way to book Lufthansa First Class.
Why I like it:
They frequently run buy miles promotions
If you buy during a good sale, you can sometimes unlock Lufthansa First for far less than paying cash (obviously)
Taxes/fees are often reasonable compared to Miles & More
One underrated LifeMiles trick:
LifeMiles pricing can behave proportionally based on total itinerary distance and cabin mix.
For example:
IAD → FRA in Lufthansa First might price at 120,000 LifeMiles
But IAD → FRA → DUS (with FRA–DUS in economy) might price at 117,610 LifeMiles
Yes — adding a connection can actually make the trip cheaper.
If that extra segment is longer, the savings can stack up even more. This is one of those weird award-booking quirks that makes points people look completely unhinged… but also saves a ton of miles.
LifeMiles caveat:
LifeMiles is amazing when it works… and occasionally chaotic when it doesn’t.
So I’d use it if:
the price is significantly better, or
you’re buying miles during a strong promo
But I still wouldn’t call it my favorite “stress-free” program.
Option 3: Air Canada Aeroplan (my favorite)
If I had to pick one program for booking Lufthansa First Class as a practical traveler, it’s usually Air Canada Aeroplan.
Why I love Aeroplan:
Strong Star Alliance access presence
Frequent transfer opportunities / occasional mile promos
Often better pricing than United
Much better overall flexibility than some alternatives
Great for “book now, improve later” strategies
For example, I often see routes like:
IAD → FRA for around 100,000 Aeroplan points in First
(Always remember: award pricing can change, so use that as a real-world example, not a guarantee.)
The real magic: flexibility
Aeroplan lets you cancel flight rewards up to 2 hours before departure, and you get your points back (with any applicable fee depending on fare type). Their official policy confirms cancellations are allowed up to 2 hours before departure.
This is huge for Lufthansa First because the best seats often open at the last minute.
My recent example:
I had a ticket booked:
BER → FRA → BKK (in Lufthansa & Thai)
Originally, it was:
85,000 points + a cancellation fee option
or100,000 points with more flexibility / free cancellation
I went with the more flexible option. Then the itinerary BER → FRA → LHR → BKK, with the last flight in Thai First Class, became available (yes. — I realize I’m posting about Thai First in a Lufthansa posting, but same flexibility applies). The First Class itinerary also priced at 100,000 points with less flexibility, so I cancelled and rebooked immediately.
Which means… in my head… I upgraded to Thai First for free.
Girl math? Absolutely.
Points math? Also yes.
4) My best strategy for actually scoring Lufthansa First
If your dates are flexible, here’s the playbook I recommend:
Step 1: Book a backup flight
Book a solid business class option first — ideally with a flexible program like Aeroplan. Flying business is still better than flying economy.
Step 2: Monitor award space inside 14 days
Start checking seriously 14 days prior, and gradually more often. In my experience, 2-4 days prior is where the magic often happens.
Step 3: Rebook fast when First opens
Lufthansa First seats can disappear quickly. Don’t wait if something becomes availabile. I’ve missed opprotunities before because I waited too long to make the decision.
Step 4: Prioritize the right program
My personal ranking:
1. Aeroplan → best mix of price + flexibility
2. LifeMiles → best for weird sweet spots / cheap bought miles
3. United → easiest, lowest cash fees, but often worst points value
4. Miles & More → best availability, but hardest currency + high surcharges
5) A few extra tips most people miss
Look for flights with unsold First Class seats
If Lufthansa is still selling multiple First Class seats close to departure, there’s a better chance award space gets released. Some frequent-flyer guides recommend checking paid inventory as a clue before the award drop. The Lufthansa 747 and a380 both have 8 first class seasts. Using Google Flights, you can see how many flights are still open.
Frankfurt is the dream
If you can start your itinerary at FRA, you get access to the famous Lufthansa First Class ground experience — including the First Class Terminal if you’re departing Frankfurt on Lufthansa First.
Keep an eye out for the First Class Terminal directions when arriving at the airport. It’s a bespoke experience that’s unique to Lufthansa and to Frankfurt Airport.
Connecting passengers can still use the First Class Lounge in the main terminal, but the Terminal is a unique experience with a chauffeur service direct to your plane.
Don’t obsess over direct flights
Sometimes adding a short feeder segment (especially with LifeMiles or Aeroplan) can:
lower the mileage cost
unlock more availability
create a better routing
Final Verdict
If you want Lufthansa First Class and don’t want to overcomplicate it:
Use Miles & More if you already have the miles and want the earliest access
Use Aeroplan if you want the best all-around strategy
Use LifeMiles if you’re chasing a sweet spot or buying miles on sale
Use United if you want low fees and simple booking
My personal strategy?
Book a flexible business class ticket first, then pounce on Lufthansa First when it opens close-in.
That’s how you turn a “nice redemption” into a bucket-list flight.
And honestly?
That’s the kind of points magic I live for.
